Aletsch Suspension Bridge

The Aletsch Suspension Bridge connects Belalp with Riederalp and is one of the most impressive hiking highlights in Valais. Directly in front of the glacier gate of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the 124-meter-long bridge spans the Massa Gorge at an altitude of approximately 80 meters.

Spectacular Connection Across the Massa Gorge

The suspension bridge was opened in 2008 and re-establishes the historic connection between Belalp and Riederalp. Previously, this path could be traversed over the Aletsch Glacier. Due to the glacier’s retreat, this is no longer possible today.

Crossing the bridge offers impressive views of the Massa Gorge, the glacier gate, and the mighty glacier landscape. The view into the depths provides a special adrenaline rush.

Hike from Belalp to Riederalp

The classic hike leads from Belalp over the suspension bridge to Riederalp. The route is approximately 11 to 12 kilometers long and takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on the variation.

The moderately difficult hike leads through varied landscapes with alpine meadows, rocky sections, and ancient Arolla pine forests. The path consistently offers spectacular views of the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding Valais Alps.

The Aletsch Panorama Trail

The path connects spectacular viewpoints, alpine landscapes, and impressive glacier views. The suspension bridge is located on a particularly impressive section between Belalp and Riederalp, making the magnificent natural scenery immediately tangible.

Getting to the Suspension Bridge

Belalp is a suitable starting point. Belalp can be reached from Blatten bei Naters by cable car. From the mountain station, the marked hiking trail leads past Hotel Belalp and continues through the alpine landscape to the suspension bridge.

The return journey is from Riederalp by cable car to Mörel. If you wish to undertake the hike in the opposite direction, travel from Mörel to Riederalp and hike from there to Belalp.

Best Travel Time and Safety

The suspension bridge is generally accessible during the snow-free summer months. Depending on weather and trail conditions, as well as mountain railway operations, the season may vary.

Good hiking boots, weatherproof clothing, sufficient water, and sure-footedness are required for the hike. Although the bridge is stable and safe to cross, it can still seem challenging in strong winds, rain, or if you have a fear of heights.
